Carotid Ultrasound

Instructions for the Test

There is no special preparation for the test. You can take all your medications as usual. It would be helpful to wear an open collar shirt.

What is a Carotid Ultrasound?

This test uses ultrasound to make images of your carotid arteries. It is a safe and painless test.

How is the Test Done?

You will be asked to unbutton the top button of your shirt. You will be lying on your back on the exam table. The technologist uses a transducer (microphone) with a special gel to make the images. Plan on being at our office about one hour.

Test Results

The images will help determine location and extent of any plaque in the carotid arteries. The physician will review the images and give you the results at a later date or send the report to your physician.
